Kidney tumours

Small renal masses may be observed, removed with partial nephrectomy or destroyed with an energy modality when anatomy and patient fitness fit published criteria.

Ablation options

Cryoablation, radiofrequency ablation and microwave ablation are the most common percutaneous tools. Irreversible electroporation is discussed in selected cases where tumour proximity to the collecting system or vessels makes heat-based ablation less attractive, subject to local experience and ethics approval.

Imaging follow-up

Contrast-enhanced CT or MRI schedules after ablation differ by centre. Your team will explain how they define technical success and when biopsy might be reconsidered.

See IRE (NanoKnife) for the generic mechanism of irreversible electroporation.

Not every small renal mass should be ablated. Some benign mimics and indolent tumours are followed on active surveillance instead.

Considering focal therapy?
